Landscape & Beyond
12 May - 11 Jun, 2005

Amelia

Amelia Johnson Contemporary in conjunction with Art-Lease are excited to be collaborating on this exhibition featuring the work of some of the leading artists in the Asia-pacific region.  Entitled “Landscape & Beyond” each piece has been selected to demonstrate how these artists, by using the landscape as inspiration, have created works that are strikingly diverse in media and stylistic application.

Michel Tuffery is one of the Pacific's most established contemporary artists. His artwork explores the positioning of the Pacific way of life in terms of point of origin, migration, cultural beliefs and the hybridisation of cultures, often incorporating Maori motifs and allegorical references. In this exhibition he presents his new sculptures of bulls fabricated from steel wire and corned beef cans.

Richard Adams, Guy Warren & Milenko Prvacki create works on canvas and paper that interpret the structures found within the landscape whether they be natural or man made.  Milenko Prvacki is one of Singapore's leading artists and educators whose oeuvre focuses on the exploration of representation and construction. During his illustrious 30-year career, he has had over 160 solo and group exhibitions all over world, and received numerous awards.

Guy Warren is one of Australia’s most distinguished and internationally acclaimed artists. Awarded the Archibald Prize in 1985, Warren was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1999 and has received over 23 other national and international awards throughout his 60-year career. His abstract, heavily textured paintings contrast brilliant colour with swirling patterns and shapes to create a landscape found only in the imagination.

Graham Fransella uses the landscape as a backdrop. Layered applications of paint combined with the fragmentation of his imagery and bold linear drawing, gives his figurative work the same elusive qualities of cave paintings or urban graffiti. His work is represented in many public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House Canberra, and the Saatchi & Saatchi collection in London.

Although their backgrounds are varied and their work even more so, this exhibition presents a not to be missed opportunity to view outstanding works of art by an eclectic and truly talented group of artists.

There will be a performance by Richard Adams & Michel Tuffery at the gallery on the opening night

Mr. Frank Wilson, Consul-General of New Zealand will open the exhibition.
