Amelia Johnson Contemporary’s annual winter exhibition presents an eclectic mix of works by six artists, all selected from the gallery’s award winning stable of artists.
Highlights in the exhibition will be the work of newcomers to the gallery, Ho Sin Tung, Eric Chan and Li Jin Bing.
Young, emerging artist Ho Sin Tung is currently studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her small mixed media works, collectively titled “12 Nights”, are depictions of the artist’s sexual diaries of her dreams. On her choice of technique the artist writes, “..They (the dreams) are so unorganized and fragile that I can only make them into collage….”. Whilst each one is unique, together they complement each other to create a powerful insight into the mind of the artist.
Eric Chan’ s new works divert from his signature floral studies to depict reverse negative portraits in somber monochromes. Using recognizable images taken from 16th to 18th century western masterpieces, Chan updates these to the 21st century through his skillful palette selection and his signature blurring of the brushstroke.
Lin Jin Bing will be showing several ink on paper works dedicated to capturing the delicacy, pureness and beauty of the female figure. His elegant linear drawings, their brush lines silently outlining the female body, are pierced by a fragment of blue and white porcelain. For the artist the inclusion of this fragment is a reference to the true beauty of a woman – a hidden strength and inner beauty that reveals itself over time.
Amongst the newcomers work will be new work by three regular exhibiting artists; Richard Winkworth, Caroline Yi Cheng and Larry Yung. British artist Richard Winkworth, will be showing his new works using encaustic and gold leaf on found cardboard, the caligraphy and text of the boxes adding another tactile dimension to his simplified forms. Caroline Cheng will be presenting a new work from the Prosperity series, a baby robe, fabricated from thousands of pink miniature porcelain butterflies sewn onto a reconstructed imperial child’s robe. Winter o7/o8 sees the welcome return to Hong Kong of Larry Yung. A Chinese American artist, Yung presents three new works from his “House of the Flying M” series. These works are nostalgic looks into the artist’s past featuring recognizable motifs such as the iconic 1950’s Mickey Mouse.
